    Marine Engine Pre-Listing Mechanical Triage

Score your engine before you list, and see whether records, targeted fixes or a mechanical survey is the right move.

    Do not repower to sell

A repower rarely returns more than half its cost on a boat under 45 feet. What does move price:

    • Complete, legible service records
    • Fresh fluids and filters with dates
    • An oil analysis and compression report in the listing file
    • Clean, painted, well-lit engine spaces

When to get a mechanical survey first

If the engine smokes under load, runs hot, vibrates at cruise, or has no records for two years, a buyer's mechanic will find it. Finding it first lets you decide whether to fix or disclose and price. Finding it second costs you the negotiation.

Score the engine below to see which band you are in.
